From the A.B.C. of Spiritualism
By B. R. Austin, A.M., D.D.

Question: From the viewpoint of Spiritualism, how does Jesus save men?

Answer: By his truth and by his life. According to the teachings of Jesus men become FREE (or saved) by knowledge of the truth. “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Spiritualism fully accords with this. It holds that the whole duty of man is to find the truth, love the truth, follow the truth and that in so doing he becomes a free man. As the life of Jesus was a beautiful commentary upon his teachings, even a more eloquent exposition of the truth than his words, as it was, in fact, a “living epistle, known and read of all men,” it is truly said that Jesus saves men by his life.

Healing Work or Private Counseling available after any Sunday Church Service by an attending Minister.

I believe it was Bonnie Smith who sent these stories for the newsletter (please correct me if I am mistaken).

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, “When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah”. The teacher asked, ” What if Jonah went to hell?” The little girl replied, “Then you ask him”.

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks
like.” Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “honor” thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, “Thou shall not kill.”

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, “Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?” Her mother replied, “Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.” The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, “Momma, how come ALL of grandma’s hairs are white?”

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, “Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.” “Yes,” the class said. “Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn’t run into my feet?” A little fellow shouted, “Cause your feet ain’t empty.”

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: “Take only ONE. God is watching.” Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.

The Best Prayer I Have Heard In A Long Time…from Bonnie Smith and Marie Kulman

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought
to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love. Amen

Christian One liners …thanks to Evadne

“Don’t let your worries get the best of you, remember, Moses started out as a basket case”

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited – until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

The good Lord didn’t create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.

When you get to your wit’s end, you’ll find God lives there.

People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn’t belong.

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile.

I don’t know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?

A lot of church members who are singing “Standing on the Promises” are just sitting on the premises.

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges

Be ye fishers of men. You catch them – He’ll clean them.

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

Don’t put a question mark where God put a period.

Don’t wait for 6 strong men to take you to church.

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers “fruits of the spirit” over “religious nuts!”

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

He who angers you, controls you!

If God is your Copilot – swap seats!

Prayer: Don’t give God instructions — just report for duty!

The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don’t change the message, the message changes us.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.

“Father, bless the person reading this in whatever it is that You know they need”

A Brief History of New Years Day

Around 2000 BC, 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year making New Years the oldest of holidays. They had no written calendar but they celebrated on what is now March 23. The beginning of spring and new crops being planted made this date a logical choice.

In 46 B.C. January 1st was the beginning of the New Year after Julius Caesar developed a calendar that was based on the 4 seasons.

New Year’s Day is not celebrated on the same day in every culture, our culture uses a solar calendar but some cultures have lunar calendars based on the phases of the moon.

During the middle Ages, Christians celebrated New Year’s Day on December 25th, the birth of Jesus. Later it was celebrated on March 25, the Annunciation. It was returned to January 1st by Pope Gregory XIII sometime during the sixteenth century

No matter what day New Years falls on it is a time for great celebration and looking forward to prosperity and good luck in the coming year.

The History of New Year Resolutions

In Rome around 153 B.C. Romans would exchange gifts before the beginning of a new year and ask for forgiveness from their enemies. Janus was a mythical king of early Rome. With 2 faces he could look back at past events and also look to the future, he became the symbol for resolutions and the beginning of the tradition of New Year resolutions.

There is a website that will actually send a reminder for you to keep your resolution. If interested in using that service call or email Patti. Here are some common New Years resolutions. Surely you can add more to the list.

1. Lose weight
2. Quit smoking
3. Spend less
4. Save more
5. Get organized
6. Eat healthier
7. Get fit
8. Be more understanding of others
9. Find a better job
10. Work on self improvement

Crème De Menthe Cake

Prepare a white cake mix as directed on the box substituting 4 tablespoons of Crème De Menthe for 4 tablespoons of the water (or use 2 teaspoons mint extract and a few drops of green food color). Bake as directed. Let set 10 minutes then top with a can of Hershey’s Fudge Topping (not Hershey’s syrup but the kind for hot fudge sundaes). Set the can of topping in a pan of boiling water till of spreading consistency so it will not tear the cake.

Mix together an 8 ounce tub of Cool Whip with 4 Tablespoons of Crème De Menthe (or use 1 teaspoon mint extract and a few drops of green food coloring). Spread on cooled cake and refrigerate overnight. Top each piece with an Andes Chocolate Mint.
